ZEF – THE STORY OF DIE ANTWOORD
Jon Day | South Africa | 2024 | 90′ | OV
The story of the controversial South African rap-rave duo »Die Antwoord«, consisting of Ninja and Yolandi, is told by their daughter Sixteen Jones as a course of constant ventures, from the humble beginnings to the global phenomenon, with a focus on the last five years marked by a move to LA. The documentary outlines and circles around the »Die Antwoord« concept of an excessively exaggerated subcultural aesthetic: high-frequency baller rhythms, vulgar gestures, tattoos, gold teeth, in general: a fashion that wildly mixes shrill signs and gains its coolness precisely from the transgression of all notions of elegance, plus stylishly aggressive videos in Cape Town ghettos and an entourage peppered with outsiders. Here, life and art are supposed to interact inseparably to create an intense performance with regular excursions into the dark, abysmal, disturbing and freakish. And the result: a great love story!
