MUTINY IN HEAVEN: THE BIRTHDAY PARTY
Ian White | Australia | 2023 | 98’ | OV
Mutiny In Heaven, narrated entirely by original members of post-punk band »The Birthday Party«, describes how Nick Cave and his school friends startled audiences with confrontational performances, outlaw gothic horror and an anarchic lifestyle. Featuring never-before-seen personal archive footage, unreleased tracks and concert footage, as well as graphic novel sequences by German comic artist Reinhard Kleist, Mutiny in Heaven offers a thrilling front row seat to perhaps one of the most legendary live acts in music history.
A gripping tale of rise and implosion, it deals with issues of inspiration, creativity, addiction, fame, interpersonal conflict and the fraught relationship between artistic vision and self-destruction – all underpinned by the dark, ironic humor of the band members.
»In Mutiny in Heaven: The Birthday Party, it’s not just the protagonists who rock out, but the whole cinematic trappings, with Ian White giving the sense that the movie too is throwing bottles, smoking monster pipes and banging around in the mosh pit, soon to wake up with a terrible hangover.« (The Guardian, 10/29/23)
