Nationally, Cologne’s musical image is defined by carnival and Kölsch rock. Internationally, the city is especially famous as a center of electronic music. THE SOUND OF COLOGNE traces this history from Karlheinz Stockhausen and the legendary ‘Studio for Electronic Music’ at the WDR via the Krautrockers of Can to the present day. It shows that direct lines can be drawn across the decades and that the various scenes are closely linked via influential clubs, labels and record stores. Why was Cologne in particular able to exert such a strong pull that musicians:inside from all over the world flocked to the city, where their music continued to develop successfully?
